El Fayoum City And Oasis, Things to visit & do in Egypt in El Fayoum oasis and city : The Fayoum is a wonderful area of Egypt with a rich and interesting history. Fayoum is a large and extremely fertile depression in Egypt's Western Desert, some 95 kilometers southwest of Cairo, Fayoum oasis is both rich in history and outstanding in natural beauty Fayoum was known as the Land of the Lake by the Egyptian Pharaohs. They hunted for game, birds and fish upon the banks of nearby Lake of Karun. The earliest settlements in Fayoum date back some six and a half thousand years and under the Ptolemies in the 3rd Century BC, new improvements were made to farming, such as drainage and crop rotation. Today you can see the water wheels which are a tradition of farming in the area.. The successive civilizations of Egypt left their mark in Fayoum, through the pharaonic, Greek, Romanian, Coptic and Islamic civilizations. This 692 sq. mile depression , was a lush paradise during prehistoric times. It's water level was 85 meters higher than today (currently 45 meters below sea level) and the Nile regularly flooded through the low mountains separating it from the Fayoum. At 215 square km, the current lake Qaroun remains Egypt's largest salt water lake, it is also the oldest lake in all our world, The prehistoric people who lived in Fayoum oasis were, at first, nomadic hunters and gatherers, but later began harvesting plants near the lake. This developed into what is said to be the earliest agricultural area in the world, where fences were erected and guarded warehouses built. It has remained an agriculture center, well known for it's fruits, vegetables and chickens. Fayoum City, the main town in the oasis, The Fayoum Oasis is a manmade oasis. Although usually described as an oasis, Fayoum is not fed by underground water, like the western Sahara Desert oases further south west, but by water from the Nile transported to this natural triangular depression by a series of canals. Having irrigated the oasis.
