Why Ramses Second erected  Abu Simbel Complex :
There are various purposes why Ramses second erected Abu Simbel Temples:

Ramsses II erected the Great Temple to admit and honor himself and to devote it to the god Raa-Hor-akhty. Ramsses also made a Small Temple as a monumental building to his beloved wife, Nefertari, and devoted it to goddess Hat-hor.
Ramses second wanted to memorialize his victory against Hittites people during  the Battle of Qadesh.

Abu simbel temple reliefs symbolizing him triumphing over his enemies are throughout Abu Simbel Great Temple. Try to gaze closely, you will find that even the base of the temple was incised with scenes of the traditional ancient enemies of Egypt
either from Asia or Africa.
the traditional Egypt enemies from Asia were the Hittites, and Egypt's traditional enemies from Africa were the Nubian, that is why Ramsses II chose this area in the Nubian land to erect his temple to impress the Nubians, and to show them his power.
There is other reason why Ramsses II erected his temple very far from Nile river and too far from the Egyptian cities, capitals etc, as he represent himself as a real complete god in the sanctuary room, Usually Ancient Egypt religion represent  kings who ruled Ancient Egypt as half god and half human, but after their death they will be unified with god Osiris, but here Ramses II represented himself as a full god sitting by the ther gods, when you enter the sanctuary room you will find  rock-cut sculptures of four seated figures: Raa-Hor-akhty, the venerated king Ramesses II,  god  Amun Ra and  god Ptah.
Do you know the miracle of Abu Simbel temples?
Ancient Egypt Architects in the 13th century BC  were able to align the temple so that on October 22 and February 22, the sun’s rays enter into the sanctuary to illuminate the three figures of RamssesII, Raa-hor -akhty and Amon Ra, but sun rays never illuminate  the statue of god  Ptah, the god of the underworld, where sun not arrive, so ptah statue remains in shadow.
The architects were able not to build Abu Simbel temple, but to carve it out of solid rock. Abu Simbel temples  impress tourists even now! it is a glamorous place to visit, and merit to travel from Aswan to visit it.
