The Egyptian museum in Cairo had become a landmark in Cairo's landscape near the most famous Tahrir square, and is an architectural masterpiece in its own right, The design for the Egyptian museum building was chosen through an international competition launched in 1895, the first of its kind,and was won by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon.
Tousands of articrafts were finally moved to the newly constructed building, which was officially opened by Khedevi Abbas Helmi II on 15thNovember 1902. Alongside some of the most magnificent articrafts found in ancient Egypt places, such as the Royal tomb contents of Thuya and Yuya and Psusennes I, the jewellery from Tanis, and priceless scrolls of papyrus, the collection continues to grow with new discoveries every year.
