Short Information About Jerash
Jerash City
Jerash, the Gerasa of Antiquity, is the capital and largest city of Jerash Governorate , which is situated in the north of Jordan, 48 kilometres (30 mi) north of the capital Amman towards Syria.
Jerash is considered one of the largest and most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the world outside Italy.
It is often called Pompey of the East.
Initially built by Alexander the Great, the town started to prosper after the Roman conquest, and was one of the Decapolis cities in
northern Jordan
When Pompey seized Syria and Palestine from the Greeks in 63 BC Rome obtained a wealthy and prosperous area. At that time
there were a number of cities scattered throughout Syria and Palestine who had become very important in international & regional
trade. Instead of suborning them to Roman rule, Rome allowed them to form a loose confederation that became known as the
Decapolis. This confederation became a client state of the Roman Empire
